Together with Lingard Hospital Dr Young is trialling a revolutionary personal fitness monitor to help patients rehabilitate after Knee Replacement the BPM Pro (a BBraun product).
The device is worn around the ankle and gathers data to allow the patient, doctor and physiotherapist to monitor recovery. More than just measuring the number of steps walked each day (or number of stairs climbed), the monitor records the range of motion of the knee following specific exercises. The range of motion of the replaced knee is critical in improving function after knee replacement surgery.
The goal is to inspire patients to achieve more each day and so speed their recovery and provide the best result. After a knee replacement procedure the best time to increase movement is early (within the first month), and the device gives the patient the ability to chart their own efforts.
